Why Inclusive Music Lessons Matter
Inclusive music education is a teaching philosophy that ensures students of all backgrounds and abilities have equal access to music-making. It shifts the focus from purely technical performance to the intrinsic value of each student’s creative voice. Here at Breaking the Barrier, we do everything we can to promote inclusivity in our own lessons by creating lesson plans for each individual student based on their needs. Here is why inclusivity throughout music education matters.
Creating a Space for Everyone
We believe in creating inclusive environments for our students to celebrate their diversity with them. When diverse groups collaborate, they break down social barriers, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect. Our students come from all different backgrounds, but their shared love for music brings them together. That combined with our inclusive standards allows students to all see one another as peers on equal footing. In inclusive settings, neurotypical students see their disabled peers as equally capable musicians, which reduces prejudice and otherness. Beyond that, the students with disabilities will be empowered through access to music education that works for them. This will always be our goal.
Improving Accessibility
We implement several strategies that can improve music lessons for students depending on their needs. If a student has an aversion to loud sounds, we can make sure their lessons are scheduled in our Annex location, to ensure they aren’t overwhelmed by other students’ playing. If a student is non-verbal, we can learn how to communicate in the best way to help them learn music at their own pace. Our lessons are based in Applied Behavioral Analysis Verbal Behavior Approach to address positive behavioral changes. This takes place in the form of language and communication for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. No matter what they need, we will create a specialized lesson plan to maximize each student’s musical abilities.
Our music school is founded in the belief that access to music education should available for everyone, no matter their background, age, or disabilities. For any questions about our school or specialized lesson plans, please contact us here. Thanks for reading! We’ll catch you next week.
